Two soldiers died after the military boat they were riding capsized while crossing the Butalo River in Barangay Butalo, Datu Salibo, Maguindanao del Sur.

The incident happened on May 2, 2025.

The Joint Task Force Central said the two were in a combat patrol operation on board the military boat when the vessel capsized while crossing the river due to strong current.

The soldiers went missing when currents swept the boat away, prompting authorities to launch an intensive search and rescue operation.

The body of one of the soldiers was discovered afternoon on May 3, 2025 while the body of the other soldier was found floating in a separate location along the river.

“This tragic incident underscores the ever-present dangers faced by the members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines in the line of duty. Despite the hazards posed by both natural elements and conflict, our soldiers continue to serve with unwavering courage and commitment,” the Joint Task Force Central said in a statement.

“Their sacrifices are solemn reminder of the high cost of peace and the nobility of military service in safeguarding our nation,” it added.
