A rider and his companion were injured after slamming into a responding fire truck in Cebu City.
A closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage in Barangay San Nicolas Proper, Cebu City showed that at 4:57 p.m. on May 3, 2025, a fire truck was approaching an intersection of C. Padilla Street. It was heard that the truck put the siren on, and that it was loud and can be heard from a distance.
The truck slowed down and honked upon reaching near the alley before crossing the intersection. But as the fire truck was crossing, two motorcycles with two persons each on board headed toward the vehicle.
The other motorcycle was able to apply brakes and missed the fire truck by a hairline.
However, the other motorcycle slammed into the front section of the fire truck. The driver and the person riding pillion were thrown off the vehicle.
According to Police Lt. Col. Ma. Theresa Macatangay, spokesperson of the Cebu City Police Office, the two parties were able to reach an amicable settlement.
It was learned that the fire truck of Barangay Sawang Calero was one of emergency vehicles dispatched to respond to a fire incident in Barangay Guadalupe, Cebu City on May 3, 2025.
Cebu City Police reminded drivers that responding emergency vehicles should be given priority to pass through as this is prescribed by the law.
The following day, or on May 4, 2025, another vehicular accident happened in the same spot at 4:55 a.m.
In a CCTV footage of the barangay, it was seen that a motorcycle turned left going to T. Abella Street from C. Padilla Street. But at about the same time, a bus traversed the area that led to a collision. The bus plowed the motorcycle a few meters away.
According to San Nicolas Proper Barangay Chairman Clifford Jude Niñal, they have endorsed to the City Council, including a letter-request from Gothong Memorial National High School which is located near the intersection, to open the area to one-way traffic only.
However, Niñal said that the City Council has no response yet to the request, as of this writing.
The barangay has already mounted a "Slow Down" signage at the intersection following the incidents. But barangay officials hope that the Local Government Unit of Cebu City would be able to provide a long-term solution, especially that there is a blind spot in the area.
