A magnitude 4.9 earthquake occurred east of Mapanas town in the Province of Northern Samar at 12:41 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7, 2025.

According to an earthquake bulletin issued by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the earthquake was located 12.81°N, 125.82°E - 072 km N 59° E of Mapanas, at a depth of 17 kilometers.

The earthquake was reported to be tectonic in origin, and was first reported as a magnitude 5.4 temblor. 

Aftershocks are expected, the PHIVOLCS advisory reads.
