A fire broke out at the Basista Public Market in Pangasinan around 3 a.m. on Friday, May 9, 2025.

In a video captured by Raymund Mariñas, flames can be seen engulfing the market. He said he was on his way home to Bayambang when he passed by the burning structure.

The fire reached the second alarm. Additional firefighters from nearby towns and cities were needed to respond.

The fire also spread to three houses located behind the market. No injuries were reported.

Among those affected was Elvie Alvarado who lost both her market stall and her home.

“Back to zero po kami, pero andiyan pa rin ang faith namin kay Lord,” she said.

Authorities are still investigating the cause and assessing the cost of the damage.

“Sa ngayon po, under investigation pa. Nangangalap pa kami ng puwedeng pinagmulang ng sunog,” SFO3 Teresa Pascua, Chief of the Operations Section at the Basista Fire Station, said.

According to the Market Division Chief, about 90 to 95 percent of the market was damaged by the fire.

Because of this, the local government is planning to temporarily relocate affected vendors to the town auditorium.
