A moderately explosive eruption on the summit crater of Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island was recorded dawn on Tuesday, May 13, 2025.
The eruption took place at 2:55 a.m. based on seismic and infrasound monitoring data of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
The eruption lasted for about five minutes while a voluminous ash emission event reached 4.5 kilometers high from the summit crater.
A loud explosion was heard in Barangay Pula, Canlaon City in the Province of Neg bros Oriental, and in La Castellana town, Province of Negros Occidental.
Glow on the summit crater was aparent because of the pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) that flowed along the southern slopes. The flow stretched to about two kilometers from the summit crater. Huge ballistic fragments were observed to have fallen around the crater.
A thin ash fall was experienced in the following areas in Negros Occidental:
La Carlota City (Barangays Cubay, San Miguel, Yubo, and Ara-al), Bago City (Barangays Ilijan and Binubuhan); La Castellana (Barangays Biak-na-Bato, Sag-ang, and Mansalanao).
Alert Level 3 to mean intensified unrest or magmatic unrest prevails over Kanlaon Volcano.
