The Duterte family has secured sweeping victories in Davao City in the 2025 midterm elections, solidifying their political stronghold in their hometown.

Former President Rodrigo Duterte won the mayoral race anew by a landslide with 662,630 votes.

The Davao City Board of Canvassers proclaimed Duterte as the new city mayor on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, even as Duterte is behind bars miles away in The Hague, Netherlands for charges before the International Criminal Court.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has said that a winning candidate need not be present physically during proclamation. In Rodrigo’s case, what happens after the proclamation will be up to the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG).

His foreign and Filipino lawyers will reportedly discuss how he may take his oath as mayor.

The former President served as mayor from 1988 to 1998, 2001 to 2010, and 2013 to 2016 before he became President, according to data gathered by GMA Integrated News Research.

Rodrigo’s son, Sebastian, was also proclaimed as vice mayor with 651,356 votes.

Vice President Sara Duterte earlier said her brother might serve as acting mayor.

Meanwhile, Rodrigo’s eldest son, Davao City First District Rep. Paolo Duterte, was also reelected with 203,557 votes.

Paolo’s son, Omar, also won as the city’s Second District representative after garnering 160,432 votes.

Candidates under the former President’s local political group, Hugpong sa Tawong Lungsod (HTL), who ran for city councilor also emerged victorious.
