A 25-year-old man died after a landslide hit the stalls at a carnival or “perya” in Barangay Bunao, Tupi, South Cotabato afternoon on Tuesday, May 13, 2025.

The victim, a resident of Barangay Laguilayan, Isulan, Sultan Kudarat, was working at the carnival and was reportedly asleep when the landslide occurred.

According to the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMO), the victim suffered a fatal head injury after being buried under the soil.

Other individuals survived but the man did not reach the hospital alive.

“Nakatulog sa loob. Ang naging cause nun kasi tinamaan yung ulo niya, biglang natabunan ng lupa, yun yung nakita ng emergency team natin and may sugat sa kamay at sa paa,” MDRRMC Tupi Officer, Emil Sumagaysay, said.

His remains were retrieved and turned over to his family with the assistance of the carnival’s management.

MDRRMC said the landslide may have been triggered by continuous rainfall over the past weeks.

“Siguro, naipon yung tubig from the successive na ulan na nangyari sa amin. Last two weeks kasi merong localized and intertropical convergence zone and this week, merong mga localized thunderstorms. Siguro, yun ang naging trigger doon sa landslide na nangyari,” Sumagaysay added.

Meanwhile, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) deployed more backhoes to aid in clearing operations.

The carnival has since been relocated to a safer place.
