Two police officers died after a lightning strike hit their camp in Naujan, Oriental Mindoro during a heavy rainstorm evening on Tuesday, May 12.

The two were members of the Regional Mobile Force Battalion 4B (RMFB 4B). The Philippine National Police (PNP) identified them as Patrolman Laudelino Samarita Lomio II and Patrolman Ruzzel Jay Ferrer Fontarum.

According to a statement by Police Brigadier General Roger L. Quesada, regional director of Police Regional Office (PRO) MIMAROPA on Thursday, the officers were performing their duties when lightning hit the area during heavy rain.

Fellow officers gave them first aid and CPR right away. They were rushed to Mindoro Medical Center, but doctors declared them dead on arrival.

"Their tragic loss is a painful reminder of the silent risks our personnel face in service to the nation. On behalf of PRO MIMAROPA, we extend our deepest condolences to their families and loved ones," Quesada said.

The PNP promised to give full assistance, honors, and all benefits to the families of the two fallen officers.

“Their dedication and courage will never be forgotten. May they rest in eternal peace,” Quesada added.
