Muddy stream flow was observed on Friday, May 16, 2025, in the Municipality of La Castellana, Negros Occidental.

The muddy stream flow occurred three days after an explosive eruption of Mount Kanlaon dawn on May 13, 2025. 

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the muddy stream flow was spotted at Buhangin River in Barangay Robles.

Based on data from the La Castellana Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, the muddy stream flow has affected four barangays. 

PHIVOLCS explained that rain in previous days may have caused the muddy stream flow.

However, the muddy stream flow on May 16, 2025 is not as viscous compared to the same event in June 2024. 

“Kagabi meron ring na-monitor na pag-ulan. Itong pag-ulan ang maaaring nagresulta sa muddy stream flow na ito,” said Engr. Mari Andylene Quintia, resident volcanologist at Kanlaon Volcano Observatory. 

Residents have been advised to avoid fetching water from the river. They are also reminded to boil water especially for drinking.
