More than 7,000 families were displaced by the massive weekend flooding in some areas in Mindanao.

A 65-year-old man had drowned.

Authorities said the man fell into a creek and drowned while on his way home amid rising floodwaters in Kumalarang, Zamboanga del Sur.

At least five barangays in the town were affected.

“Meron sapa doon na umaapaw maraming mga bahay yung nasalanta, and that’s the first time umabot yung baha sa covered court,” Kumalarang Councilor-elect, Lorenzo Gomonit, said.

According to the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), around 1,222 families were affected as of 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 18, 2025.

In Maguindanao del Sur, widespread flooding also hit several towns following continuous rains.

Several motorists were reportedly stranded in Datu Salibo while floodwaters entered the houses and offices in Shariff Saydona Mustapha.

In Mamasapano town, floodwaters reached knee-deep, damaging cornfields and other crops.

The Office of the Civil Defense-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (OCD-BARMM) said more than 6,000 families were affected by the flood in the province.

Around 24 hectares of crops, including rice and corn, were also submerged and damaged.

Authorities are still assessing whether to place the province under a state of calamity.

“Sa municipal level yung pinag-usapan natin maybe 1 to 3 barangays masabi na natin kung affected kung matatagal siya. It should be ang munisipyo mag de-declare ng state of calamity,” OCD-BARMM Director, Joel Mamon, said.

Meanwhile, nearly 100 families were also affected by the flood in Barangay Baluntay, Alabel, Sarangani.

Some were forced to evacuate to a relocation site.

Floodwaters have since subsided and cleanup activities have been conducted.

“Kailangan gyud ni limpyuhan natu ni kay kay kung dili limpyuhan kay lapok man,” Barangay Baluntay Purok Chairman, Jonathan Hapulas, said.
