Three persons were confirmed dead in a vehicular accident involving an oil tanker and a tricycle in New Washington town, Province of Aklan.

The 23-year-old driver of the tricycle died while at the hospital.

The incident happened at 7 a.m. on May 19, 2025 in Barangay Ochando. 

Among those who died in the incident is Dr. Beonify de la Cruz Opinion, 58 years old, the program chairperson of the Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Filipino at Aklan State University (ASU).

He was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

The other casualty is identified only as a certain “Don,” 50 years old.

Meanwhile, the driver of the oil tanker was identified as Ramil Fernandez, 37 years old,  resident of Minglanilla town, Cebu Province.

Four other tricycle passengers are receiving treatment at the hospital, as of this writing.  

In an investigation conducted by personnel of the Philippine National Police in New Washington, the  tricycle was headed for Kalibo town, while the oil tanker was traversing toward Barangay Dumaguit in New Washington.

Police said that the driver of the oil tanker admitted he dozed off, lost control of the vehicle, and slammed into the tricycle from the opposite direction.

The oil tanker driver is detained at the New Washington Municipal Police Station, as of posting time.
