A fallen concrete electric pole pinned to death a man on board his motorcycle in Cadiz City, Province of Negros Occidental.
The incident happened in Barangay Zone 4, Cadiz City past 3 p.m. on May 20, 2025.
A video showed of residents and members of the Cadiz City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO) responding to the incident.
The victim on the video was identified as Cyrel Batojan, 34 years old.
According to the Cadiz City Police, the electric post fell to the ground at about the same time the motorcycle driver was traversing the area.
"Dumaan siya mula siya sa east papunta sana sa city proper. Nandoon rin ang posteng natumba,” according to Police Lieutenant Lovella Cordova, deputy chief of Cadiz City Police.
The victim was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital after suffering from fatal wounds.
The Northern Negros Electric Cooperative (NONECO) has conducted an investigation on the incident.
According to NONECO, a truck mixer passed in the area and hit an electric line that tugged the post hard.
"Mayroong force na tumama sa kable, that’s why natumba ang poste na concrete at naputol. May alambre sa ibabaw na siyang main source, mainline na nagse-serve sa Cadiz,” said Engr. Wilbe Bilbao, general manager (officer in charge) of NONECO.
The incident caused a brownout in a few barangays, but power supply was restored immediately.
"It’s a special type ng mga kabilya na inilalagay sa poste. Hindi iyan substandard,” Bilbao said.
Bilbao has assured that NONECO will provide assistance to the family of the victim.
