The sight of eight bags of trash thrown at the Iloilo Sunset Boulevard disheartened personnel of the Iloilo City General Services Office (GSO).

The eight bags of garbage were found in Barangay Navais, District of Mandurriao in Iloilo City dawn on May 19, 2025.

“Meron tayong collection point ngunit naka-tanner bags at hindi naka-garbage bags. Hindi ito sa amin,” said Engr. Neil Ravena, head of Iloilo City GSO.

The eight trash bags were opened in the hope of finding clues as to where these could have come from, but the effort failed.

There were no closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras either in the area.

According to a Louie Jamela, councilman in Barangay Navais, it is least likely that the trash could have come from their barangay as there is a regular schedule in trash collection. However, he admitted that monitoring the area has remained a challenge as duty hours of "barangay tanods" (village watchmen) is only from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

“Bale ang [garbage collection] schedule namin is Saturday, Wednesday, and Sunday…meron dyan na tatlong bahay ngunit sila naman ang nag-aasikaso sa kanilang basura,” Jamela said.

GSO has already requested assistance from the Public Order and Safety Management Office and the police on the concern.

GSO vows t file complaints against persons who have started treating Iloilo Sunset Boulevard as a dumpsite.
