Two men died in separate incidents when heavy rains flooded Cagayan de Oro the past week.
On Sunday, May 25, 2025, Personnel of the Cagayan de Oro Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Department (CDRRMD) retrieved the body of a 31-year-old man who was carried away by flood five days earlier in Barangay Tumpagaon.
The body of another man was found on Friday, May 23, after he was reportedly carried away by flood at a creek in another barangay, Barangay Cugman.
CDRRMD personnel said that the man tried to save a woman trapped on the other side of the creek but he was carried away by the flood, instead.
“Subo nga pamalandungon nga wala tay dagko nga weather disturbance but naa tay mga casualty nga ingon ani ato lang pahimangno nga mag-inampingon ta always,” said Nick Jabagat, head of CDRRMD.
Heavy rains also flooded Mastersons Avenue in the city’s uptown area on Saturday and Sunday, May 24 and 25.
A video captured by Bency Ellorin showed the flood entering a subdivision.
The Eastbound lane of the Kauswagan Highway became impassable for a time after the Umalag Creek overflowed.
“Hopefully, in the middle of the week mulurang na siya since almost one week naman pud ni nato na experience. Usahay, dili man ingon ana kataas atong ma-experience na ITCZ,” Jabagat said.
The rains experienced in several parts of Mindanao that have triggered flooding have been caused by the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ).
