At least two people were injured when up to 76 houses were razed to the ground when a fire hit a residential area in Barangay 24, Cagayan de Oro City morning on Monday, June 2, 2025.

The fire broke out around 10 a.m. and was raised to third alarm before it was put out around midday.

The fire reportedly spread quickly due to strong winds and because most of the houses affected were made of light materials.

One of the residents affected was Leonita Abarico who has lived in the area for more than 50 years.

“Wala na, nasunog na ang balay nako, nasunog na ang mga gamit nako. Tanan… ref… tanan nako nga mga gamit, asta akong mga manok, asta akong mga grocery nahurot akong mga baligya,” Abarico said.

According to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), the damage to properties reached more than P4 million.

The two residents who were hurt were brought to the hospital for treatment.

“Naa ta’y reported injuries. Duha kabuok, isa kay naay laceration sa kilay ug ang isa kay naa sa 1st to 2nd degree burn kay natuluan siya sa plastic kanang natunaw nga plastic,” BFP-Cagayan de Oro City Operations Chief, Senior Inspector Kyle Lauzon, said.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, as of this writing.

“Kana sa under investigation pana siya kay wala paman tay definite nga source nga kung unsay hinungdan sa sunog. Most likely (gikan sa household),” Lauzon added.
