A video showed of stray dogs shot by a security guard in a university campus in Iloilo City.
The video showed two dogs scampering while gunshots were heard.
Moments later, a man in white was seen. The security guard has been identified.
In a police investigation, the guard admitted shooting the dogs on suspicion the animals are infected with rabies.
“Initially lumalabas na nagduda umanong posibleng may rabies. At the same time, nagpo-pose daw ng threat sa mga estudyante. Maliban dito, ang mga basura inaano (kinakalat) ng aso,” Major Shella Mae Sangrines, spokesperson of the Iloilo City Police Office, said.
Sangrines vowed that police personnel will assist persons determined to file charges against the guard for violation of the Animal Welfare Act.
“I-evaluate ito ng Jaro PNP [Philippine National Police] kung walang may-ari at baka tumulong ang ilang advocates na balikan talaga. At ang ebidensya magwa-warrant, bigyan talaga ng leksyon at nararapat na penalidad ang responsable,” Sangrines added.
GMA Regional TV One Western Visayas tried to seek a statement from the guard, but he was fetched reportedly by personnel from his security agency.
Earlier, students reported to an animal welfare group that stray dogs in the campus are being killed.
The university issued immediately a statement that condemns the shooting as a form of animal cruelty. Investigation on the incident is going on, as of posting time.
