The security guard of a university caught on camera shooting stray dogs was already suspended from work.

The security agency, in an interview with GMA Super Radyo Iloilo, said they are sad about the suspension of the guard due to animal cruelty.

The incident caught on closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera inside the campus of Central Philippine University (CPU) in Iloilo City took place on May 29, 2025.

The suspension of the guard took place immediately after the incident, according to the security agency, after he was summoned to the university president’s office.

The guard owned up to his fault, the agency added.

However, he denied using his service gun. The guard said he used an air gun instead to drive away the stray dogs for fear they are infested with the rabies virus, and to prevent the dogs from scavenging garbage bins and scattering trash.

The security agency further said that the guard underscored no dog was killed in the incident.

However, the guard could not answer specifically if there was a directive issued by the school administration to go against stray dogs.

While under suspension, the agency added, they will try to find out from the school if a directive against stray dogs exists.
