More than 1,300 families were displaced by flooding following heavy rains in Zamboanga City.
According to the Zamboanga City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), more than 1,300 families from 15 barangays in the city were affected as of Monday, June 9, 2025.
Heavy rains inundated the city the past two days.
Floodwaters reportedly reached neck-deep in Barangay Cabatangan.
In Barangay San Jose Gusu, residents captured a snake found swimming in waist-deep floodwaters.
Several houses in Barangay Ayala were also submerged.
Authorities said at least 80 percent of families affected have reportedly returned to their homes after floodwaters subsided.
“We have to monitor the weather situation, of course, the BDRMCS are still on heightened alert,” Zamboanga CDRRMO Head, Dr. Elmeir Apolinario, said.
State weather bureau PAGASA said the bad weather was caused by the combined effects of the southwest monsoon or Habagat and trough of the low pressure area (LPA).
Meanwhile, flooding was also reported near the mountainous area of Barangay Lintagan, Sibuco, Zamboanga del Norte.
Several motorists were reportedly stranded when the road was submerged in floodwaters.
In Barangay Lipuno, rocks fell onto the road after the soil loosened due to the heavy rains. Authorities immediately conducted clearing operations.
The temporary spillway at Pangian Bridge in Barangay Pangian also collapsed.
Authorities said the spillway had been serving as a detour route while the main bridge is under repair after it was damaged in 2023 due to flooding caused by the LPA.
“Dito po kami dadaan sa poblacion to Curuan, Zamboanga City. Galing Zamboanga City to Sibuco, doon din (dadaan),” Sibuco MDRRMO Head, Majid Arasad, said.
