An alleged former leader of the New People’s Army (NPA) believed to be responsible for the 2014 attack on a police station in Surigao del Norte was arrested in Barangay Talisay, Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur.

In a statement, the Surigao del Norte Police Provincial Office said the 41-year-old suspect identified as alias “Jama” was arrested by virtue of several warrants for murder, attempted murder, multiple attempted murder, and attempted homicide.

Police said the suspect was a former commanding officer of SDG, GF16A, Northeastern Mindanao Regional Committee (NEMRC) of the NPA.

Authorities said the suspect was allegedly involved in the July 10, 2024 attack on the Alegria Municipal Police Station that injured two police officers.

During the attack, four police personnel were also reportedly kidnapped, and 17 firearms were seized.

He was also the alleged leader of the group that burned a heavy equipment owned by a private company and a forward truck loaded with copra in Barangay San Juan, Alegria.

Police added that the suspect was also allegedly involved in the October 3, 2011 attack on a mining company, which resulted in damage amounting to P580 million.

He was also identified as the alleged leader of the group behind an ambush on Army troops in the town of Sison in 2013.

“The successful capture of the wanted NPA member is proof of the police's determination and dedication to deliver justice to the victims and their families. He must be held accountable for the crimes he has committed,” Surigao del Norte Police Provincial Director, Col, Warren Dablo, said.
