Several motorists were stranded for more than three hours after a landslide blocked a portion of the national highway in Dumalinao, Zamboanga del Sur following heavy rains.

Despite the rain, residents took the initiative to build a makeshift bridge using sturdy wooden plank over a drainage canal to help stranded motorcycle riders pass through the road in Barangay Camalig.

The landslide blocked all four lanes of the highway, along with uprooted trees, making it impassable especially for larger vehicles like buses and trucks.

The highway connects the cities of Zamboanga and Pagadian.

Authorities conducted clearing operations immediately.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) also deployed a payloader to remove the soil and debris that blocked the road.

After more than three hours, all types of vehicles were able to pass through the area again.

No one was reported hurt in the incident.

The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) advised motorists to remain vigilant while traveling.

MDRRMO said the landslide was caused by continuous heavy rains brought about by Tropical Storm Wutip, which, although outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), has softened the ground and weakened the soil foundation.
