Parents and students are advised that local governments will now decide on class suspensions related to weather conditions, according to the Department of Education (DepEd).

DepEd said local government units (LGUs) know the situation on the ground better, thus, are in a better position to decide whether or not to suspend classes.

Under this new policy, class suspensions will no longer be based on typhoon signal numbers.

Instead, they will depend on the LGU's assessment. The department said the goal is to avoid unnecessary disruptions to students’ learning.

However, Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte, who also serves as president of the League of Cities of the Philippines, said they have yet to receive the official memo from DepEd.

For now, she said they will continue following the current class suspension guidelines based on typhoon signals and heavy rainfall warnings from PAGASA.
