The Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Zamboanga (DENR-9) has launched an investigation into the alleged illegal cockfighting activity at a protected area in Zamboanga del Sur.
In a video captured by a netizen, residents are seen gathering around a fenced portion of Lake Maragang, Mt. Timolan in Tigbao town on June 12, 2025, where the alleged cockfight happened.
The incident had drawn sharp criticism for its potential damage to biodiversity and environmental sustainability.
According to a resident who requested anonymity, the activity was reportedly part of the retirement program of a DENR-9 official who manages the area.
“Pahalipay ra gyud. Wala gyud sugal na involved. Giapil pa man gani ihaw ang nakadaog,” a resident said.
Because of the incident, DENR-9 relieved the official involved from his post while investigation into the incident is ongoing.
GMA Regional TV One Mindanao is reaching out to the official involved for a statement, as of this writing.
DENR-9 may file charges against the official if he is found to have committed lapses.
Authorities closed the area to the public temporarily.
The provincial government also condemned the incident, calling it not only a violation of the National Integrated Protected Areas System Act but also a serious threat to the province’s ecological integrity and natural heritage.
Mt. Timolan and Lake Maragang Rainforest Park are known for their rich biodiversity and play a vital role in maintaining the province’s ecological balance.
Authorities also urged the public to be vigilant and report any similar unauthorized activities that may endanger protected sites.
