Large volumes of waste were collected from the trash trap installed at the Bitan-ag Creek in Cagayan de Oro City after the recent flooding.
According to the Hapsay Sapa Team of the local government, most of the trash collected were household wastes, plastic bottles, and large logs believed to have come from Bukidnon.
Bitan-ag Creek, an 11-kilometer-long waterway, flows through the city’s central business district.
During downpour, the accumulated waste at the creek causes the water to overflow, which will result in urban flooding.
“But there are also tributaries ani kaning mga canals nga gapaingon diha sa Bitan-ag Creek so daghan ang i-add pa gyud nato ana, ang silt, grabe kayo ang silt ba tungod kay kusog gyud ang tubig maanod ang yuta ug balas,” Hapsay Sapa Team Head, Patrick Gabutina, said.
Due to the overwhelming amount of garbage from the recent flooding, the trash trap sustained damage.
The city government is considering repairing the existing structure or replace it with a new one.
Despite the damage, the team cleared the creek successfully of the waste and continues to monitor its condition closely.
“We are looking into either removing the trash trap or coming up better na trash trap kay para masulbad pud nato ning mga anod-anod dinhi sa atong sapa,” Gabutina added.
Meanwhile, the local government urged residents to practice proper waste disposal.
