Authorities are yet to determine the liability of the mini dump truck driver involved in a road mishap in Silay City, Negros Occidental.
"Ang nilalakad namin na makakuha kami ng expert mechanic na kung meron talagang mechanical error sa sasakyan or just human error or bad judgment sa ating driver,” according to Lt. Col. Mark Anthony Darroca, chief of the Silay City Police Station.
Over ten patients are recuperating at the hospital, as of posting time, including the driver identified as Hernane Masa.
However, seven others died on the spot.
Marvin Amarado last saw his younger brother, Marlon, on Friday, June 25, 2025. Their last conversation was pleasant, he said, and that nothing was unusual, nor was there any premonition.
However, hours after, he saw a post on Facebook of a road mishap in Silay City.
“Mula sa bahay, tinanong ko pa kung papasok sya. After an hour, nakita ko sa Facebook, naaksidente na siya. Malubha na pala ang tama sa kanyang ulo,” Marvin said.
He learned that Marlon was rushed to the hospital but expired there.
“Hindi maganda ang nararamdaman, parang sasabog ang dibdib ko. Tanggapin na lang natin kasi aksidente. Isang click lang nawala,” Carol Amarado, Marlon’s sister, said.
Another person on board the mini dump truck was identified as Jerson Leonillo, 38 years old. He died on the spot, according to his sister, Julie Ann Ortiz.
“Hindi talaga maganda ang nangyari sa kuya namin. Kambal pa naman ang mga anak niya. Kawawa naman sila,” Julie Ann said.
Jerson and Marlon are two of seven who died when the mini dump truck they boarded on from a tree-planting activity tipped on its side in Barangay Guimbalaon morning on June 25, 2025.
Should the driver’s lapses get established, he will face charges for reckless imprudence resulting to multiple homicide and physical injuries.
However, according to the police, relatives of other victims have already expressed disinterest in pursuing a case.
