A barangay in Malaybalay City, Bukidnon experienced a hailstorm, which surprised residents in the area.
A video captured by Rovyniel Esguerra, a resident of Barangay Dalwangan, showed round ice pellets falling on rooftops. His photos also showed hailstones that he and others collected from the ground.
“Tingala mi kay ang atop namo kay gapiti-piti bitaw mao to nilingi dayun mi sa gawas tapos pagtan-aw namo sa gawas nag-ulan na diay og ice,” Esguerra said.
No one was reported hurt but strong winds during the weather disturbance reportedly almost damaged some properties.
“Wala ra pero hapit musulod ang tubig sa among (balay) sa salibo tungod sa kakusog sa hangin,” Esguerra said.
According to state weather bureau PAGASA, the phenomenon was confirmed to be a hailstorm, which occur when strong thunderstorm updrafts carry raindrops into extremely cold areas of the atmosphere, causing them to freeze into ice pellets.
“So that’s the time na mahimong mudako ang atong hailstone dayun mubug-at that’s the time nga dili na siya kaya i-support sa atoang updraft nga hangin kana nga time mahulog na ang atong hailstone sa ground as hail,” PAGASA Mindanao Weather Specialist 1, Raul Montilla, said.
PAGASA advised the public not to be complacent during a hailstorm as hailstones can harm people and even damage crops, vehicles, and structures, depending on their size.
“Ang damages ani mag-depende o mag-vary sa kadak-on sa atong hail. So kung dako ang atong hail posible siya makadamage sa atong crops, vehicles, buildings ug bisan sa atoa sa tao posible siya makaharm sa atoa,” Montilla said.
