As the new school year continues, some schools in Mangaldan are still dealing with serious classroom shortage, forcing them to use makeshift learning spaces and adjust class schedules to accommodate all students.

At Mangaldan Integrated School SPED Center, the situation is especially tight. Ten of its classrooms have been assigned for Special Needs Education (SNED). This left regular students with fewer rooms.

“Nagkakaroon pa rin talaga kami ng kakulangan sa classroom, kasi ‘yung ibang classroom namin gagamitin para sa ILRC,” Dr. Leo Blaquir, the school principal, said.

As a temporary solution, the Department of Education (DepEd) set up makeshift classrooms for Grade 7 and Grade 8 students. Some classes are also being held at the school’s covered court, which is now being converted into classrooms for two sections.

Some parents, while thankful for the temporary solution, worry about safety, especially during rainy weather.

“Palagay ko gagawan naman nila ng paraan para maging safe ang mga bata, kasi hindi safe kapag maulan,” Mary Cris Pura, a parent, said.

Still, many students welcome the change, preferring the new setup over overcrowded rooms.

“Para hindi na po kami siksikan at hindi rin mainit,” Ryza Albao, a student, said.

DepEd Region 1 is now assessing how many more classrooms are still needed across schools in the region.
