The Provincial Board (PB) of Leyte has questioned the disposal of medical waste from Mandaue City.

The PB is set to summon stakeholders on the issue.

Initial transport of infectious wastes stored in plastic containers at the facility of a former bus terminal in Mandaue City started on July 9, 2025.

According to the company commissioned by the city government to dispose of the hazardous waste, the infectious waste will be brought to Leyte for treatment, shredding, and disposal at the firm's own landfill.

However, the process has been questioned.

Leyte PB has already coordinated with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Department of Health (DOH) on the concern.

According to 5th District PB Member, Atty. Carlo Loreto, former vice governor, they were appalled upon learning of the news.

Loreto questioned why disposal of garbage from Cebu has to be done in Leyte.

“Wa man gyud nagcoordinate diri. Better pa siguro og nganha nas Cebu ang basura sa Cebu,” Loreto said.

In addition, Loreto is worried about the transport of infectious waste.

“Spillage or infection, kana man gani sakit sa baboy o ASF di man gani nato patabukon og border, kani pa noong sakit sa tawo,” Loreto averred.

The service provider will be summoned, and that an inspection of its facility is recommended.

“Maayo pod nang naa sila maka-explain, makatubag, and if circumstances warrant, inspeksyonon ilang facility. Ila dapat i-explain, kinahanglan nila i-explain sa public how they’re doing it and why its safe,” Loreto further said.

In a press statement, the service provider assured they are ready to elucidate on the processes involving disposal of hazardous waste.

The service provider underscored that their company has been trusted by medical and industrial clients in the area of infectious waste disposal for years, and that their operation is based on the stringent guidelines, with the required permits, from the DENR-Environmental Management Bureau (EMB).
