President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. led the groundbreaking and time capsule laying of the Caticlan Passenger Terminal Building in a ceremony at the Caticlan Airport in Malay town, Province of Aklan on Monday, July 14, 2025.
"Serving as the main gateway to Boracay Island, Caticlan Airport is the most practical transit option for visitors to reach the popular beach destination. Its location in the Municipality of Malay, north of Aklan, places tourists just a ferry ride away from Boracay," according to the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) in a post.
PCO said that the two-storey Passenger Terminal Building will have a total floor area of 36,470 square meters with six passenger boarding bridges and 36 individual check-in counters. It is projected to "handle seven million passengers per year, with a simultaneous capacity of 3,000 passengers at any given time."
The target completion date for the project is 2027, PCO added.
Megawide Construction Corporation (MCC) secured the contract in 2024 to design and build the new Caticlan Passenger Terminal Building. The airport is owned and operated by Trans Aire Development Holdings Corporation (TADHC), a subsidiary of San Miguel Corporation (SMC) Infrastructure.
