Five passengers of a tricycle were injured, while a baby died in a vehicular mishap in Dumangas town, Province of Iloilo.

Romeo Dimzon, a grandfather, recalled fond memories with his grandchild while being interviewed by GMA Regional TV One Western Visayas.

Romeo is the grandfather of an eight-month-old baby boy who perished in the collision of a motorcycle and a tricycle in Barangay Sulangan, Dumangas morning on July 14, 2025.

“Wala tayong magawa, aksidente yan. Masakit sa damdamin. Napakabait na bata, masayahin. Hindi sya namimili kung sino ang magbabantay sa kanya,” Romeo said.

In a closed-circuit television (CCTV) video, a motorcycle slid and slammed into a tricycle traveling from the opposite direction.

“Pag-slide, nag-encroach sa daanan mismo ng tricycle na kasalubong at doon nag-impact sa unahang bahagi kung saan umangat ang tricycle,” said PEMS Kim John Banzon, chief investigator at Dumangas Municipal Police Station.

The tricycle tipped on its side on impact.

Five passengers were injured. The baby, held by an uncle, was supposedly taken to the población for the grandmother to take care. The other passengers sustained minor injuries, but the baby suffered a fatal wound on the head.

“Dumiretso sa lugar namin. Hindi ko makabig sa kabila kasi may tricycle na naka-park. Alangan namang kabigin ko sa kabila dahil may kasalubong,” Armando Flores, the driver, said.

The motorcycle rider is a 15-year-old boy. He also sustained abrasions.

Aside from driving without license, the rider failed to present registration documents of the motorcycle.

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) 6 will issue a show cause order to the rider’s father.

"Kung tino-tolerate niya, or alam nilang nagda-drive ang anak nya ng motorsiklo at wala siyang effort to prohibit the child, may criminal liability siya,” according to Atty. Gaudioso Geduspan II, LTO 6 regional director.

It was further learned that the baby’s mother is 14 years old only, and a person with disability (PWD).

Romeo said they are open to a dialogue with the rider’s family, but as of now they are seeking justice for the baby’s death, beginning with the filing of a case.

“Kakasuhan namin,” Romeo said.

GMA Regional TV One Western Visayas has sought a statement from the rider but he is reportedly taken under the custody of the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office of Dumangas.

His father refused the news team an interview.
