Authorities intercepted an attempt to transport a total of P1,149,000 in undeclared cash at the Security Screening Checkpoint, Departure Area, Terminal 2 of Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) in Lapu-Lapu City.

According to a press release posted on PNP Aviation Security Group's official social media account, a 26-year-old Filipino male passenger from Basak, Cebu City, bound for Hong Kong, was “flagged during routine security screening after X-ray operators detected suspicious images resembling bundles of currency in his baggage."

The incident on July 14, 2025 was escalated immediately to the airport authorities.

"In coordination with the Bureau of Customs (BOC) and the PNP Aviation Security Group (AVSEGROUP), a verification was conducted, which led to the discovery of the P1.149 million in undeclared cash," the statement added.

Further, the press statement pointed out that the passenger “failed to declare the currency and refused to sign the held baggage receipt, later stating he was unaware of the regulation limiting outbound transport of Philippine currency to P500,000.”

"The intercepted cash was turned over by the BOC to their office at the Arrival Area, Terminal 2, MCIA, for proper disposition and further investigation," the statement further said.

“This incident reflects the strong coordination and alertness of our security forces. AVSEGROUP remains committed to ensuring safe and secure airport operations at all times,” said Police Brigadier General Jason Capoy, AVSEGROUP director," it added.
