More than 20 vendors at a local marketplace in Barangay Cugman, Cagayan de Oro City are expected to be displaced as authorities are set to clear structures that obstruct the public road and drainage canal.

Personnel of the Task Force Demolition under the local government visited the local marketplace to assess the area.

The local government said the operation is in line with the Department of Interior and Local Government’s (DILG) directive on road clearing.

The demolition team has already marked the areas with structures that need to be torn down to clear the road.

“Atong nakita gyud nga naa na gyud ang mga structures o kaning mga vendor sa maong canal nga naglapas na sila, nag-extend na sila sa structures nga building kung diin asa sila originally gapamaligya,” Task Force Demolition Chief, Antonio Resma, said.

The local government added that several structures extended beyond their boundaries and were already covering the clogged canal, which contributed to flooding in the area.

“Kita sa city government nga malimpyohan pud tong canal kay naa naman pud sila nakapatong sa mga drainage system pud nato. So maglisod ta og limpyo sa canal kay naa man ang mga namaligya aside nga mandato gyud ni siya sa DILG,” Resma added.

The association of vendors said they understand the government’s policy, but they urged officials to listen to their concerns, especially since many will be affected by the road clearing.

“Wala man problema nga mu-setback pero dili paman gud siya kung buot huna-hunaon angayan kay dili man gud siya congested ang merkado bisan kamo mag-observe. Kapila na nako gi-challenge ang barangay nga obserbahe ninyo… even the city, lingkuri ninyo gikan sa buntag paingon sa gabii kung tinuod ba nga ang mga negosyante nga mamaligyaay diri ang hinungdan sa traffic… mas traffic pa ang highway,” Zone 2 Cugman United Vendors Association President, Jigs Norman Neri, said.

Vendors also raised concerns about being relocated to an area that is far from customers and not suitable for business.

“First time in history sa Brgy. Cugman kay dinhi man ko natawo, akong ginikanan dinhi natawo… wala man mi nagtuo nga ang talipapa dinhi maingon ani kabibo, sala diay namo? Sa panahon nga mingaw pa, walay barangay nga nagtabang nga mabibo ni… karon nga nabibo, naa naay barangay nga muguba sa pag-asenso,” Neri added.

Meanwhile, barangay officials explained that they are just following the mandate, which is long overdue.

“Of course, katung igo na lang musibog, cooperate na lang ta kay para ra man ni sa kaayohan sa tanan… dili man ni para sa barangay, dili man ni para sa gapamaligyaay, kundili para sa tanan, tanan lumulupyo nga muagi diha… mga bisita nato and, of course, katung mga ma-displaced gyud, dili sila mabalaka kay naa man barangay nga pangitaan sila og plastar nga lugar nga maplastar pud sila sa ilang pagpamaligya,” Barangay Councilman Kishan Aldeguer said.
