Five riders involved in a drag race on the national highway in Kidapawan City have turned themselves in to authorities.
The race was caught on CCTV and prompted the local government to offer a P50,000 reward for information that could identify those involved.
In the video, three male riders are seen stopping at the intersection of Quezon Road National Highway in Barangay Poblacion shortly before midnight on Sunday, July 13, 2025.
Moments later, more riders joined. When the traffic light reportedly turned green, the group sped off with one appeared to be imitating a high-speed “Superman” stunt.
After the local government posted the CCTV footage on social media and the video went viral, five of the riders - 17, 18, 19, and 20 years old - surrendered on Wednesday, July 26. They were accompanied by their parents and guardians.
A 24-year-old rider is being pursued, as of this writing.
Police said the riders were not detained but were given a stern warning by the local government that drag racing is prohibited.
“Wala naman po tayong narinig na kahapon na sinabi ng ating city mayor na complaint or charges will be filed against them, these individuals, but rather pinangaralan lang po sila ng ating city mayor. Unang-una, ihinto na yung drag racing dito sa Kidapawan City. Pangalawa, mag-aral silang mabuti, tulungan nila ang kanilang mga parents para makatapos sila sa pag-aaral. Pangatlo, it’s for them not to go out from their house especially during curfew hours,” Kidapawan City Police Station Chief, Lt. Col. Jose Marie Simangan, said.
It can be recalled that other young people have also engaged in drag racing in the same area.
Police is set to tighten its enforcement of an existing ordinance on drag racing.
“Pakiusap ko lang sa mga individual, lalung-lalo na yung mga bata na mga mapupusok pa magpatakbo at mapusok sumasali sa drag racing, itigil na ninyo ang drag racing dito sa Kidapawan. Huwag na nating antayin na darating ang punto na madidisgrasya pa kayo,” Simangan said.
