A total of 15,178 individuals was affected by flooding due to torrential rains dumped by the southwest monsoon (Habagat) in Western Visayas, based on data from the Office of Civil Defense 6. 

Myrna Burla, a resident of Barangay Tagbak, Jaro, Iloilo City, said floodwaters affected their place weeks back. Under an inclement weather condition on Thursday, July 17, 2025, members of her family were already on alert.

“Pag umabot sa kusina, iniaakyat namin ang mga gamit. Tapos kinakabahan ako dahil ang ref namin… kung hanggang dyan na kukunin namin at iaakyat sa taas,” Burla said.

Marivic Nadula, another resident, went vigilant for choppy waves.

“Naghahanda kami kung lumaki ang alon, masisira na naman ang mga ito [referring to her house],” Nadula said.

According to PAGASA-Iloilo monitoring, Orange Rainfall warning was hoisted over Iloilo City, as well as in Iloilo Province, Aklan, Capiz, and Guimaras. A Red Rainfall warning was hoisted over the Province of Antique.

“Bandang Antique ang medyo crucial sa pag-ulan lalo na ngayong araw until weekend dahil sa malakas na southwest monsoon,” said PAGASA Iloilo weather observer Charlie Depra.

The Iloilo City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO) is on alert.

“Per barangay natin has already identified ng safe zones nila kung saan pwede nilang dalhin ang mga residente nila na mag-a-undergo ng preemptive evacuation,” Darwin Papa, head of operations of the Iloilo City DRRMO, said.

In addition, flooding due to intense rainfall was experienced in Antique. A video showed vehicles moving slowly in a flooded street of Barangay Poblacion, Sebaste town. A landslide was also reported in the said town.

Aside from inundating streets, the flooding also destroyed a house.

Vehicles had a hard time plying in Santo Rosario, Tibiao town after a road was inundated with water runoff. 

In Barangay Bitas, Patnongon town, a hanging bridge snapped, while in Barangay San Fernando, San Jose town, strong winds and rough waves were reported. Residents were alerted of the situation.

According to the Antique Provincial DRRMO, water level of 10 rivers in the province was monitored tightly.

“Mula kaninang umaga, continuous dito ang moderate to heavy rain especially sa central and northern Antique. Mino-monitor natin ang lahat na mga ilog dahil medyo may pagtaas ng (lebel) tubig,” said Broderick Train, head of Antique PDRRMO.

The water level in the river of Ibajay town, Province of Aklan was monitored as well, as floodwaters reached a school in Madalag town.  

Approximately 1,300 schools in Western Visayas declared suspension of classes, affecting over 400,000 learners, according to the Department of Education 6.
