The Provincial Health Office (PHO) of Surigao del Sur has confirmed the first case of Mpox in the province.

In an advisory dated July 22, 2025, the PHO said the patient sought medical consultation at a health facility after experiencing symptoms such as rashes, fever, fatigue, and sore throat.

The patient was also found to have traveled to areas with confirmed Mpox cases.

The patient was isolated immediately and is currently receiving medical care.

PHO said it is working closely with the concerned local government units to facilitate contact tracing, in coordination with the Department of Health-Caraga (DOH-13).

Patient’s close contacts have already been identified and under close monitoring.

“We urge the public to remain calm and vigilant. Everyone is reminded to continue observing minimum public health standards, such as frequent handwashing and wearing of face masks, especially when unwell,” the advisory said.

PHO said those experiencing symptoms are advised to seek medical consultation to the nearest health facility for evaluation and care.

Mpox symptoms include fever, chills, muscle pain, swollen lymph nodes, extreme fatigue, headache, sore throat, anal pain, and painful urination. Mpox is caused by the monkeypox virus and usually results in mild illness with rashes.

“Rest assured, the provincial government – through the health office, in collaboration with local health authorities and hospitals within the province – is undertaking all necessary measures to manage and contain the case effectively,” the advisory added.
