Kidapawan City Mayor Pao Evangelista has ordered all barangay captains to remove posters promoting tobacco that have been put up in their barangays.
According to the city government, at least 25 barangays have already complied with the directive while the others are set to conduct “Oplan Baklas” in the coming days.
The initiative is part of the implementation of the city’s smoke-free ordinance, which also includes the campaign against smoking or vaping in public areas.
Posters that promote tobacco installed at sari-sari stores, especially along the national highway and public places, are ordered removed.
The local government added that these promotional materials often feature various cigarette brands and are seen as a means of promoting tobacco use, especially among the youth.
The campaign aims to reduce the number of smokers in the city and encourage residents to prioritize their health.
Based on apprehension report of violations recorded from July 1 to 15, 2025, the number of individuals caught smoking or using vape in public areas by the Anti-Vice Regulation and Enforcement Unit has slightly increased.
Several individuals, most of whom are tricycle drivers, were issued with citation tickets more than once.
A significant number of violations was reported inside cockfighting arenas (sabungan), bars, and along the national highway.
Authorities reminded the public to prioritize their health and support the ongoing efforts to eliminate smoking-related vices.
The city government also emphasized that secondhand smoke endangers not only smokers but also those around them.
