Up to 32 stalls at the Toril Public Market Building 2 in Davao City were razed by fire. Four others were damaged.

Explosions were heard when the fire broke out dawn on Saturday, July 26, 2025.

The fire was put out after an hour.

According to some witnesses, the fire reportedly started at an eatery.

“Nag-aso naman diha sa likod. Murag ang ilahang wiring gyud na siguro. Wala man gud nagluto diha ing-arong orasa walay magluto uy. Wala pud, sirado man ang ilang roll-up,” a witness, Bryan Ortega, said.

Among the vendors affected was Patrick Pilago, a meat vendor who lost his new freezer that had only been used for a week.

Fortunately, some of the meat inside the freezer remained intact.

“Pag-abot namo diri ugdaw na. Na-damage na tanang stocks, gamay nalang nabilin,” Pilago said.

Despite the incident, many vendors immediately began rebuilding their stalls so they could resume operations and recover losses.

Among them was Perlalita Desamero who immediately put up a temporary roof for her stall after a large portion of the the marker’s roofing was destroyed.

“At least nalang ma-cover siya sa ulan ug init. So, wala mi naggamit og tent kay naay tendecy nga muana man gud, muhagba. So, temporaryohan sa namo, gibutangan sa namo og tirewire,” Desamero said.

The Davao City Economic Enterprise Office said they are waiting for the official assessment and recommendations from authorities before arranging support for vendors affected.

“Naga-conduct mi og mga assessment. Tinabangay pud sa other nga ahensya sa gobyerno para makahatag pud ta og maayo na idea sa ilaha unsaon nato pagpadayon sa pagpaninda nila sa Toril Public Market,” Davao City Economic Enterprise Head, Macky Macalipes, said.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) is still investigating the incident.
