Four dogs and three cats were found dead, believed poisoned, in Barangay Lawaan Uno, Talisay City, Cebu.

The animals were found dead morning on July 26, 2025.

Marriane Bayugan, a fur parent, owns one of the three cats that died.

Three of the four dogs and one of three cats were owned by the person Bayugan works for, while the other dog and a cat were owned by a neighbor.

According to Bayugan, they saw the dogs at around 8 a.m. on July 26, 2025, outside of their house. Froth in the mouth of the animals was apparent. She surmised that the animals were poisoned.

The animals were used to going out of the house by day and returning by the early evening. However, the animals failed to come home on July 25, 2025. They were found dead the next day.

The animals were buried in a vacant lot in the area.

The pet owners could not pinpoint any persons of interest in the neighborhood.

They said that the dogs had never been involved in any bite cases in the area, and would only bark aggressively at persons unfamiliar to them.

On July 28, 2025, Bayugan reported the incident at the barangay hall, seeking an end to alleged poisoning of pets.

Lawaan Uno Barangay Chairman Joel Cabo said that the incident is the first to be reported in their barangay. Cabo assured Bayugan and other pet owners that he will coordinate with the Talisay City Veterinarian’s Office to have the incident investigated.

Dr. Ma. Christine Hope Dejadena, city veterinarian, ordered a probe on the alleged poisoning incident, and warned culprits they could be imprisoned for violation of Republic Act No. 8485, or the Animal Welfare Act of 1998 that seeks to protect and promote the welfare of all animals.
