A modernized jeepney driver was summoned for apparently courting disaster by maneuvering the vehicle on a sidewalk in Mandaue City to get past a trailer truck. 

A video of the modernized jeepney driver's act went viral.

“Nangita gyud siya’g paagi nga mo-overtake sa truck, tan-awa sa gutter o, asa man ka agi….giamong man na niya iyang mga pasahero,” was heard in the viral video posted by netizen Christian Donald Carumba.

The incident happened at about noontime in Barangay Tipolo, Mandaue City on July 28, 2025.

The modernized public utility jeepney (PUJ) plying the Consolacion-Cebu City-vice versa route occupied the gutter and drove in a manner likely to endanger life.

After the video has drawn the attention of netizens and city officials, the Traffic Enforcement Agency in Mandaue (TEAM) acted promptly on the incident.

“Upon coming to knowledge sa incident, upon and direct and clear direction from Mayor Jonkie (Ouano), ato to giaksyonan kay lisod to ato pasagdan ingon adto pagka-reckless,” said Hyll Retuya, department head of TEAM.

Hours after the incident, the driver was reprimanded, and invited by TEAM along with his operator.

The driver went emotional as he asked for an apology. He pointed out that his act was triggered when the truck allegedly brushed against the vehicle he was driving.

However, TEAM found out that the rear portion of the truck was spacious enough to accomodate another vehicle at about the same time the modernized PUJ was trying to overtake the truck.

“Tan-aw nako sa video hawan man ang luyo, mura lagi siya'g imo gi-challenge ba. Lupigon man gyud ka adto boss kay dako kaayo to. Tinud-anay lang hinambugay murag lumbaanay,” Retuya said. 

Thus, TEAM summoned the driver for reckless driving, and for other multiple violations. He was issued a Temporary Operators Permit (TOP) by the traffic police.

TEAM coordinated with the Land Transportation Office (LTO) for a report on the incident. It is expected that the LTO will issue a show cause order against the erring driver, TEAM said.

“Piit na kaayo tos tanan, nisu'd gyud gihapon siya which is sayop gyud...akong warning sa mga motorista once naa mo sa Mandaue, mag-behave lang intawon mo, wala gyuy magbinuang sa Mandaue nga dili nato madakpan,” Retuya added.
