The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) 6 has negated any anomalous flood control project in Western Visayas.

DPWH 6 does not have an exact number of these flood control projects in its regional office and district offices, but Engr. Joel Limpengco, regional director, said that the projects are functional and are fulfilling their purpose.

“Sa tingin ko naman dito sa Region 6 ay wala naman siguro. Kasi napansin ko talagang maayos ang mga proyekto,” Limpengco said.

Following #SONA2025 on July 28, 2025, Limpengco will form a Regional Monitoring Team based on the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.

“Titingnan natin din siguro yung mga effectivity, kung talagang yung ginawa nating project effective or kung may problema,” Limpengco said.

In Iloilo City, there is a functional floodway that is working for two decades already, Limpengco pointed out.

The Iloilo Floodway was constructed during the term of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in 2004. The national government spent P5 billion for the said floodway, he said.

Contrary to other flood control projects in the country deemed deficient, or slipshod, according to the President, the Iloilo Floodway has helped several residents, Limpengco emphasized.

Angel Gumban, 75 years, a resident in the vicinity of Jaro River in Barangay Benedicto, District of Jaro said that in his childhood, he experienced floodwaters that reached chest-deep. But because of the said floodway, he has not experienced the deep flooding in nearly two decades.

“Hindi na umaabot dito, wala na. Ilang taon na yata, mahigit 15 taon,” Gumban said.

In his State of the Nation Address (SONA), the President instructed DPWH to provide him a list of flood control projects under his administration.

In his 4th SONA, the President lambasted government officials in cahoots with contractors for massive corruption that caused widespread flooding during a series of weather disturbances recently.

“Kaya sa mga nakikipagsabwatan upang kunin ang pondo ng bayan at nakawin ang kinabukasan ng ating mga mamamayan, mahiya naman kayo sa inyong kapwa Pilipino!" the President said.
