Four provinces in Eastern Visayas are among areas in the country fronting the Pacific Ocean advised of expected tsunami, following a magnitude 8.7 earthquake that struck off a Russian coast on Wednesday, July 30, 2025.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) advised that tsunami of less than one (1) meter is expected to arrive between 1:20 p.m. to 2:40 p.m. on July 30, 2025 in several provinces on the eastern seaboard of the country, including Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Leyte, and Southern Leyte in Eastern Visayas region.
Following the PHIVOLCS tsunami advisory, the Provincial Government of Southern Leyte has advised residents in coastal communities to stay away from beaches and shorelines until the cancellation of the said advisory.
"Residents in low-lying, coastal areas are urged to move farther inland as a precaution. Boat owners are likewise advised to secure their vessels and avoid navigating in shallow coastal waters. Those already at sea should stay offshore in deeper waters until further notice,” the advisory read.
The Provincial Government of Eastern Samar ordered preemptive evacuation and precautionary measures at coastal areas.
"Minor sea-level disturbances with waves under one (1) meter may reach Eastern Samar between 1:20 p.m. and 2:40 p.m. today, July 30. Residents are advised to stay away from beaches, move inland if living near the shore, and secure boats. Boats already at sea should stay offshore. Stay alert for official updates," a post on Eastern Samar Provincial Information Office added.
Further, classes in all levels at coastal municipalities in the Province of Northern Samar were ordered suspended afternoon on July 30, 2025, following the PHIVOLCS tsunami advisory and recommendation of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), namely: Catubig, Las Navas, Lope de Vega, and Silvino Lubos.
Government work and classes in all levels in both public and private schools in Tacloban City, Leyte were suspended afternoon on July 30, 2025, in compliance with the DILG advisory as a precautionary measure.
"Suspension of private work is advised but subject to the discretion of management," Tacloban City Information Office said in a post on its official social media page.
Moreover, the Leyte Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office has elevated its alert status from White to Blue in response to the Minor Sea-Level Disturbance caused by the strong earthquake.
