After more than a week of suspended classes due to back-to-back storms and the southwest monsoon, Mangaldan National High School is now considering holding Saturday classes to make up for lost learning time.

Heavy rains have kept students out of the classroom, and with bad weather still affecting Pangasinan, the school has yet to announce when face-to-face classes will resume.

In anticipation of further delays, the school is preparing a proposal for weekend make-up classes, subject to approval.

“Kung kinakailangang mag-Saturday class talaga, siguro,” Principal Eduardo Castillo said.

“Hindi natin tiyak na 100 percent ‘yung pag-aaral ng mga bata kung modular. Kaya babalikan pa rin talaga ‘yung mga pinag-aaralan nila. Kailangan talaga natin mag-adjust,” Castillo added.

The Department of Education (DepEd) requires a total of 180 school days for School Year 2025–2026. While there are buffer days available to offset suspensions, the school emphasized the need for adjustments to meet academic requirements.

Parents like Rino Cariño agree with the plan, they said students benefit more from in-person classes.

“Okey lang, para matuto ‘yung mga bata,” Cariño said.

The school said Saturday classes will only push through with parent consent. If approved, the recommendation will then be submitted to the Schools Division Office for final decision. If denied, the school will instead implement one-hour remedial classes on regular school days.
