Isabela City, Basilan Mayor Sitti Djalia Turabin-Hataman has issued an executive order adjusting school hours in all public and private elementary and secondary schools for two days due to the forecasted high heat index in the city.

Under the adjusted schedule effective Thursday, July 31 and Friday, August 1, face-to-face classes will be held from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Afternoon classes may continue through alternative delivery modes at the discretion of school heads, in coordination with the Department of Education (DepEd).

The local government said the order aims to protect the health and safety of learners.

“All school administrators are directed to inform stakeholders and ensure full compliance. The CDRRMO will assist the Schools Division Office in monitoring and support,” the local government said in a Facebook post.

The local government said based on PAGASA’s forecast, the heat index in the city may reach up to 40 degrees Celsius, which falls under the “extreme caution” to “danger” category.

The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) has warned the public about the high heat index, which may cause heat-related illnesses such as heat cramps and heat stroke.

Residents are also advised to stay hydrated, wear light and comfortable clothing, avoid outdoor activities from 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., monitor children and the elderly, and stay in cool or shaded areas when feeling dizzy.
