A 10-year-old girl died while her younger brother was rescued in critical condition after they fell into the sea near an unfinished seawall in Sta. Catalina, Ilocos Sur.
The incident happened around 9 a.m. in Barangay Tamorong, where a family had gone to the seaside for breakfast.
According to the children's mother, her two kids were playing near the seawall when her nine-year-old son slipped accidentally and fell into the water. His 10-year-old sister tried to help but also slipped, and both fell into the sea.
Firefighters from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) responded quickly and pulled the children out of the water.
One BFP personnel performed CPR immediately on the boy, who was later rushed to a hospital in critical condition. The girl was declared dead due to drowning.
The parents of the children have yet to give a statement.
"‘Yung seawall po kasi hindi pa ‘yun natatapos. Bale may portion na tapos pero on-going ‘yung pagpapagawa doon. Tapos ‘yung sa baba niya wala na pong buhangin. Dahil sa sunod-sunod na pag-ulan, lakas ng alon, wala nang space doon, tubig na agad," PCpt. Marlon Martinez, Officer-in-Charge of Sta. Catalina Police Station, said.
