Over 140 cases of leptospirosis have been recorded in Central Visayas, the youngest of which was aged one year old.
The Department of Health (DOH) 7 has logged a total of 141 leptospirosis cases in areas of Cebu and Bohol Provinces from January 2025 to August 5, 2025.
Dr. Jonathan Neil Erasmo, DOH 7 assistant regional director, disclosed that most of the patients were from the Cities of Cebu and Mandaue.
Of the 141 cases, 114 were male patients, posting 81 percent, while 27 are female, posting 19 percent.
DOH 7 has not pinpointed yet the exact circumstances as to why the youngest patient, an infant, was among the patients. However, data showed a rise in cases due to successive rainy days in July 2025 that led to massive flooding in areas of the said provinces.
According to DOH, leptospirosis is a “bacterial disease transmitted through contact with water, such as floodwater, or soil contaminated with urine (pee) of infected animals, particularly rodents (rats).”
No casualty in the region has been reported but DOH 7 said that the rise in the number of cases is alarming.
The DOH has reminded individuals again who have experienced wading in floodwaters, especially those with open wounds, to seek urgent medical consultation as leptospirosis cases can best be managed through immediate case detection.
Erasmo has also advised the public to avoid self-intake of prophylaxis, as prior consultation with medical professionals will help determine any potential side effects.
