A 65-year-old woman died while 10 others were injured after the pickup truck they were riding crashed into a bridge in Barangay San Jose, General Santos City.

Police said the people on board the truck were heading home from a resort in T’boli, South Cotabato when the accident happened.

Based on investigation, the 49-year-old female driver allegedly lost control of the pickup truck after a loud burst was heard from the vehicle while traveling downhill, causing it to crash into the bridge.

Because of the impact, some tires were dislodged, and several passengers were thrown off. Another passenger also fell into the riverbed around 10 meters deep from the bridge.

“Kita naku, naay nahagbung didto sa ubus, unya tabang ko nag-alsa sa iyaha..diri katung laki,” Purok Chairman Bonficacio Ganugang, said.

However, the 65-year-old passenger was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

Police are looking into whether overloading contributed to the crash.

“Tiningnan rin natin ang overloading na naging  dahilan kasi sabi nga ng driver nawalan siya ng preno so siyempre mabigat yung sasakyan niya at hindi talaga kayang I maneuver dahil nga pababa at mabigat yung karga niya,” Traffic Enforcement Unit Chief, Lt. Col. Joel Fuerte, said.

The driver may face charges for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and multiple serious physical injury.

GMA Region TV One Mindanao is reaching out the driver and other passengers for a statement, as of this writing.

Police added that the area is accident-prone.
