Authorities seized alleged smuggled cigarettes worth more than P13 million off Hadji Panglima Tahil, Sulu.
Personnel of the Western Mindanao Naval Command (WMNC) intercepted a motorboat loaded with alleged undocumented tobacco products around 3.8 nautical miles east of Teomabal Island.
The boat was manned by four crew members.
Seized from the vessel were a total of 226 master cases of assorted cigarettes. The motorboat was also confiscated.
“The apprehension was in violation of Republic Act No. 10863 (Customs Modernization and Tariff Act) and relevant regulations of the Bureau of Internal Revenue and National Tobacco Administration under Executive Order No. 245 and related issuances,” WMNC said.
The items seized were turned over to the Bureau of Customs (BOC) while the crew members were released after processing.
“The joint operation forms part of WMNC’s intensified maritime security patrols aimed at deterring smuggling and other illegal activities within the Sulu and Celebes Seas,” WMNC added.
“This apprehension sends a clear message to those exploiting our maritime domain for illegal activities — the Navy will remain vigilant, persistent, and ready to act to protect our seas and secure our future,” WMNC Acting Commander, Capt. Hilarion Cesista, said.
