Batanes was placed under Signal No. 1 on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, as Typhoon #GorioPH continues to move west-northwest over the Philippine Sea toward Taiwan.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Gorio was last spotted about 440 kilometers east of Itbayat, Batanes, at around 4 p.m. on August 12.

It has a maximum sustained winds of 120 km/h near the center and gusts of up to 150 km/h.

The typhoon was moving west-northwest at 25 km/h, bringing strong to typhoon-force winds up to 400 kilometers from its center.

Under Signal No. 1, Batanes may experience winds of 39 to 61 km/h within 36 hours, posing minimal to minor threats to life and property.

PAGASA said the highest possible signal for the province could be Signal No. 2 if Gorio’s path shifts.

The enhanced southwest monsoon will also bring strong to gale-force gusts over the Babuyan Islands and the northern part of mainland Cagayan on August 12, and over parts of Cagayan, Isabela, and Ilocos Norte by August 13.

A gale warning is in effect for the seaboard of Extreme Northern Luzon, with waves reaching up to 9 meters around Batanes. Sea travel is risky for all vessels, and mariners are advised to remain in port or seek safe harbor.

PAGASA said Gorio is likely to make landfall over southern Taiwan on August 13 before leaving the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by late afternoon or evening.
