Fisherfolk in Dagupan City are still reeling from weeks of losses after back-to-back storms kept them from going out to sea, and their recent trips continue to yield only small catches.
Arturo Bidal, one of the local fishermen, said they went out as early as 3 a.m. on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, but returned with only about two kilos of fish.
“Konti lang ngayon dahil malakas ang agos. Ito lang siguro mga dalawang kilo tsaka ‘yung nasa lambat,” he said.
He added that fishermen are trying to maximize the calm weather before another storm develops.
Habang kalmado pa yung dagat… edi lulusong muna. Pag medyo naramdaman na yung parating na yung bagyo, taas na namin yung bangka,” Bidal said.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said warm weather is expected in the coming days, with the temperature on August 19 in Dagupan ranging from 25 to 33 degrees Celsius.
PAGASA is also monitoring a possible low-pressure area that may form in extreme northern Luzon by Thursday or Friday, August 22.
“Sa ngayon napakalayo pa yung ating nakikita na papasok sa ating tropical information domain. Pero asahan natin na within a week ay papasok ito sa ating monitoring domain sa PAGASA,” Engr. Jose Estrada Jr., Chief Meteorological Officer of PAGASA Dagupan Station, said.
For now, fishermen remain hopeful that calmer seas will allow them to recover from their losses before another storm interrupts their work.
