A 40-year-old woman and her nine-year-old daughter died after a landslide buried their house in Barangay Sibulao, Zamboanga City following heavy rains evening on Tuesday, August 19, 2025.

Authorities said the victims were inside their house when the landslide occurred.

The two died in the hospital.

The City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) has assessed the incident to determine if other families were affected.

The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) has recommended the immediate evacuation of households at risk.

“It appears initially that heavy rains preceded the incident. We know very well that Sibulao is one of those areas that were identified by the MGB (Mines and Geosciences Bureau) to be landslide and flood-prone area,” CDRRMO Head, Dr. Elmeir Apolinario, said.

COTABATO FLOODING

Meanwhile, several motorists were stranded after flooding hit a road in Barangay Luna Norte, Makilala, Cotabato following continuous rains.

One of those stuck for more than three hours was a teacher, Irene Olanda-Bajenting, who was on her way home from school at that time.

Those who were stranded were able to cross after floodwaters subsided around 4:20 p.m.

Bajenting said this situation happens frequently, especially during a downpour. She added that the road has a small culvert, causing floodwaters to overflow onto the road.

State weather bureau PAGASA said the bad weather condition experienced in Mindanao was due to the easterlies and localized thunderstorms.
