Heavy rains triggered by the southwest monsoon and localized thunderstorms caused flooding in several areas in Mindanao over the weekend, leaving one child dead.
The nine-year-old boy drowned after he was swept away by floodwaters in a canal in Barangay Managa, Bansalan, Davao del Sur.
Police said a 12-year-old witness saw the victim with another nine-year-old boy playing near the canal when the water suddenly surged and swept them away.
The witness tried to rescue the two boys but was also carried away.
Residents in the area responded but managed to rescue only the witness and the other nine-year-old boy.
Search and rescue teams from the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) found the victim dead the following day several meters away from the canal.

Later, floodwaters could be seen overflowing onto the bridge. Debris and tree trunks were also carried away by the current.
Floodwaters also entered several houses in the area.
According to the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Department (CDRRMD), the overflow of the Bigaan River was caused by heavy rains in the upland area of Libona, Bukidnon just above Barangay Gusa.
No one was reported hurt in the incident.
In Cotabato, motorists were stranded after the spillway in Barangay Saguing, Makilala was flooded following heavy rains.
Residents blamed the undersized culvert for the flooding.
Floodwaters also caused the spillway to overflow in Barangay Pawas, Lebak, Sultan Kudarat and entered several houses in Barangay Obial, Kalamansig town.
According to a resident, the flood has already subsided but several roads in Kalamansig were damaged.
The local government is conducting assessment and validation.
